Statement on Holy Communion

To our Members and Guests

As Lutherans, we believe that Holy Communion is God’s special meal for His people. Those who come to the Lord’s Table should be baptized and properly instructed Christians who acknowledge their personal sinfulness and believe that their sins are forgiven through the Lord Jesus Christ, having faith in the words “Given and shed for you for the remission of sins.”

They must “discern the Lord’s body” (1 Cor 11:29), believing that Christ’s true body and blood are actually present in the sacrament – in, with and under the bread and wine.

Worthy communicants must be able to examine themselves and have the intention of amending their sinful lives.

We ask those who are in any doubt about the above statement to consult with the pastor before communing.

Serving at Trinity

The success of ministry and outreach at Trinity is the direct result of the application of the gifts of time and talent of all our members. Each person serves as they are led and are able, some a great deal, others focused on a single task, and all to God’s glory and in His service.

A ”work in progress,” these pages will describe opportunities for service and ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Any involvement in a committee or church leadership is completely voluntary and we encourage everyone to prayerfully consider a role and discuss it with the person or people they would be working with before accepting any task.

Programs at Trinity are managed by an assortment of committees supervised by members of the congregation. Each committee is supported by the congregation’s officers. And all volunteers seek to serve the community and congregation by keeping our Mission, anchored by the Bible, always in the front of our activities.

How we help at church is only one piece of the service we, as Christians, are called to do in our community, and many of our members are active in community affairs, ministries, and outreach programs unrelated to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Trinity Lutheran and Sacramento

The members of Trinity Lutheran Church are active in the community, and we strive to serve our neighbors with a helpful hand along with a hand simply offered in friendship.

As Christians we believe in the power of prayer.  We continually include the safety and health of our neighbors and community in our prayers.

We act on our faith in support of our prayers.  We may be able to help with a ride, hot meal, or a listening ear.  Many of our activities are intended as a “no pressure” and “no committment” way of quietly helping our neighbors.

We aren’t professional counselors, but we do listen well without judging.  If you are struggling with a difficult issue or have questions about “how God works,” please, please contact Pastor Bredeson in the Church Office for a confidential and private meeting.  If we can’t help, we will try to place you in contact with the proper resources.

Prayer Chain

Trinity Lutheran Church invites you to use our prayer chain. The prayer chain consists of a group of church members who will pray for you and your family in time of crisis or need. Your requests are taken in all seriousness and kept in strictest confidence; shared outside the chain only with your direction and permission, or in response to legal requirements.

To request prayer, call the church office at (916) 456-8701.

Fellowship

Fellowship is one of the joys of the Christian life. At Trinity we fellowship through worship, studying God’s Word together, and by a variety of events such as game nights and pot lucks (if you don’t know at least one joke about Lutherans and pot lucks, you just aren’t trying).

Trinity offers a variety of groups that meet to study the Bible and support each other through joys and challenges as we all seek to follow Jesus together.

While the current health crisis has been an obstacle to freely gathering, we continue to find ways to responsibly meet and encourage one another.

Sunday School and Adult Bible Study

Sunday School is from 9:00 to 10:00 am, using classrooms in our multi-purpose room. Classes are led by members of the church and are intended for children of all ages. This is a time for the children in our congregation to learn about God, the story of His people, and how we are a part of that story because of Jesus. Materials are always provided.

Adult Bible Study is generally led by Pastor Bredeson and takes place before worship service in the multi-purpose room, from 9:00 to 10:00 am. This is a time to explore the riches of God’s Word and learn from each other as we grow in faith and knowledge. Feel free to bring your own Bibles or to use one of the church’s copies.

Tuesday Evening Bible Study

Much of the year we also have an evening Bible Study led by Pastor Bredeson. We meet weekly, Tuesday 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, over the Internet using the Zoom meeting application. However, study is paused currently for Advent and Christmas, and will resume early January.

Call the church office to get the meeting link and login credentials. Further details are provided in the online church event calendar.

Worship

You are very welcome at our services and activities. We are glad to answer questions you may have, and our office may be reached by phone at (916) 456-8701 or email at office@tlc-sacramento.org.

What We Believe

We believe in the Triune God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe that God’s Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross and rose again for our salvation.

We believe that God offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in Christ.

We believe that the Holy Spirit gives and strengthens faith through the Word of God and the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. This is a joyous faith that offers strength, courage, and hope to all people.

We believe that Christians express their faith in a life of regular worship, prayer, Bible study, service, and fellowship.

If you have any questions, you are invited to talk with Pastor Bredeson or any church member to learn more about the hope and peace we have in Christ.

Sunday Worship

Our Sunday Worship Service starts at 10:15 am.

  • Holy Communion is offered each service.
  • Children are welcome at and encouraged to attend our services. Should you feel the need, you are invited to use our nursery (in the multi-purpose room, next to the kitchen) or sit/walk around in our entryway.
  • Nursing mothers and mothers of infants are also invited to use the nursery if they should so choose for their own comfort or privacy.

Lutheran Christians have a rich history of song and active participation in their worship.  If you aren’t familiar with our order of worship (liturgy), please feel comfortable and welcome to simply sit and enjoy our friendship and prayers.

Traditional services follow an order of worship from the Lutheran Service Book.  A bulletin is given to each person as they arrive that contains all the songs, Bible readings, and the like that will be used in the service, and many services are also fully displayed on two projector screens in the Sanctuary.  Any of us are glad to answer questions you may have about our worship and our family at Trinity Lutheran.

  • Visitors should in no way feel obligated to contribute during our offerings; offerings are collected as a way for our confirmed members to join in supporting the ministry.
  • If you haven’t taken Holy Communion with us before, please read our statement of belief about this Sacrament and talk with the Pastor or one of our Elders before partaking.  Respecting concerns for the current health issues, we are currently not using a common cup, but offer individual cups with either red wine or white grape juice (innermost circle of trays). If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please talk to the pastor or an elder before the service.

Ministry

It is simple to say we live in challenging times and that, as God’s people, we are led to help each other and our community meet and overcome these challenges … while also relishing and celebrating the good things in our lives.

Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church continually grows to act on our relationship with God, our families, and our community … always with a focus on the Bible as the foundation of our beliefs and with the vision of growing as Christ’s Disciples as our purpose.

This relationship may be most simply described as follows:

Our relationship with God

We worship the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) through our Sunday Worship Service, seasonal and special services, individual and corporate prayer, and Bible study.

Our relationship with our Family

We support, encourage, and challenge each other to grow in our faith and in the expresion of our faith.  Our various social and study groups, special events, prayer chain, and just going out to lunch with a friend contribute to this vision.  We are helped in supporting our own immediate and extended families by the example and action of our “family” at First.

Our relationship with our Community

We are effective and whole in our ministry only by taking our faith “outside.”  Members of Trinity Lutheran are active in their neighborhood, the community, and beyond, through opportunities sponsored by Trinity Lutheran and in their involvement with a variety of relief groups, short term ministries, outreach programs, food pantries, and other organizations where their love of Christ shows through.

Trinity Supports our Guard and Reserve

Trinity Lutheran Church actively supports the members of our country’s armed forces, those that have served in the past as well as those currently serving. We are privileged to have a Pastor who serves as a Chaplain with the Air Force Reserve, and we encourage his participation in this important ministry.

From Our Pastor – Rev. Jason Bredeson

Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus!

I am grateful to be a child of God in the waters of Holy Baptism.  Blessed beyond all comprehension to be the husband of my beautiful wife, Miranda.  Overjoyed to be the doting father of Ellie and Lucas.  And I am thankful for the gift of the vocation as Pastor to the loving and caring people of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sacramento CA.  I am honored to serve my country as the Individual Mobilization Augmenteee to the Wing Chaplain of the 75th ABW, Hill AFB, UT in the Air Force Reserve.

I have served as Trinity’s Pastor Since January of 2008.  Prior to that I served as Associate Pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pensacola, Florida.  It is a blessing and a joy to Pastor the people of Trinity. If you would like to know more about me and our congregation (and more importantly … Jesus!) please come by and spend some time with us!

What We Believe

The Bible – We believe the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments to be the inspired Word of God and the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

The Creeds – We accept the three Ecumenical Creeds, namely, the Apostles’, the Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds, as faithful testimonies to the truth of the Holy Scriptures, and reject all the errors which they condemn.

The Confessions – We believe that the Unaltered Augsburg Confession is a true exposition of the Word of God and a correct exhibition of the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

God – We believe that God is “… the Lord of heaven and earth … who has made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth.” We believe in a triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Man – We believe that man was created in the beginning an intelligent and moral being, with body and soul. We believe that man of his own free choice fell into sin, thus separating himself from God.

Sin – We believe that sin is every transgression of the divine Law, and that man is subject to death and eternal damnation by reason of the guilt that attaches to sin.

Redemption – We believe that God, out of pure mercy, redeemed mankind from sin through the life and death of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for the guilt of the world.

With the universal Christian Church, The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God: the Father, creator of all that exists; Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments. The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.

Being “Lutheran,” our congregations accept and teach Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone, Scripture alone, Faith alone.

Grace alone – God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.

Scripture alone – The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine.

Faith alone – By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.

Who We Are

A great question! The simplest answer is found in the two greatest commandments as it was asked of Jesus. In his reply from the Gospel of Matthew we find our identity “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind … and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” We at Trinity are broken people who are loved by God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. His grace and mercy is most clearly given to us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus who comes to us in the Word of God, to include Holy Baptism and Holy Communion … the Word in tangible form!

God gives us this love as we are gathered in worship to receive his gifts grace and mercy and to respond with our praise and thanks. Having been filled with God’s love we respond to this by loving and serving our neighbors through the various service-oriented projects we are a part of as a congregation, as well as in our lives of daily service which God has called each of us to in our families, our jobs, and our neighborhoods.

But … we are more than words on a web page! We are real people, who rejoice in the real forgiveness of a very real God! With this in mind, we invite you to come and join us in worship and service. Come and be loved by our heavenly Father, and help us to understand how we might love you and join with us in loving our neighbors.
